Hey noxid, you should enable zooming with the scroll wheel (even if not as default, as an optional setting). Also you should make said zooming zoom in/out centered about the mouse cursor.

I still like the original better. I really don't see the problem you had/have with it. Edit: The original is MUCH MORE better. Those synthy saw waves were the heart of that song, and taking them out is just a bad idea.
