If he's releasing the art in prints, he could technically claim that his reprint is a separate entity from the original, as it is no longer in Internet form. All they can really do is sue him for X cases of copyright infringement.

If you want to jump on the bandwagon GIR, I'd just recommend the newest ones, they're generally superior in most (if not all) ways to their predecessors. If you can't stand the thought of touching those gross 5th Gen pokemon, go with Heart Gold or Soul Silver, they're right up there. I think...
