There are plenty of sidescrollers. Not many free-exploration 2d sidescrolling RPG platformers though. :o The thing that is great about cave story is that there is nothing like it (to my knowledge at least).

Look at 0:07 to 0:18. That visually says "Guilty Gear" to me. Then the fact that it is the same type of game on top of that. I think they borrowed a bit from the visual style of guilty gear.
