As the 2026 Steam update of Cave Story+ has finally gone public and Steam Workshop support for mods is still nothing but a distant dream, I would like to formally introduce a simple GUI-based mod manager I made for the game.

In its current form, it's extremely simple - its functionality can be summed up as follows:
  • Lets you install new mods from a folder or a zip file
  • Lists your current mods and tells you what each of them adds/changes
  • Allows you to quickly enable/disable them or delete them entirely

*Note: while there are Mac and Linux versions of the mod manager, only Windows has been tested.

The mod manager assumes your mods are being installed in the user-facing Documents/My Games/Cave Story+/Mods directory. Currently it ignores mods that reside in the game's installation directory, as that would require elevated permissions and I personally think using the user-facing directory for mods is a better and safer practice.

A long-term idea would be to hook the mod manager up to a centralized online database (i.e. Doukutsu Club) so you can install mods from the internet. This is currently not a big priority, as there's some work that needs to be done on Doukutsu Club first and there aren't that many CS+ mods to begin with.

I actually made this mod manager a few months ago, but didn't want to publicly talk about it until the update was fully out, hoping that the final release will have Steam Workshop support for mods. Hopefully one day they'll implement that and the mod manager becomes obsolete.

If you're experiencing bugs, have suggestions, or just want to yell at me for using Rust, feel free to let me know in this thread or on the GitHub issue tracker!
