Thanks for putting this together and finishing it after all these years. Playing through this version of the game reminded me how much I love the original mod for its goofiness and creativity (but also how much I hate it for how HARD IT IS. WHOEVER PLAYTESTED THE ORIGINAL REALLY FUCKED UPoh wait). So, thanks for all your hard work here. I enjoyed myself and I'll be spreading the word that a new Rave Story has been released.

I have some notes/points of feedback. The difficult thing is that I don't know how many of these apply to exclusively this HD version, or if they also apply to the original. I didn't replay the original so I'm just working off my memory:
There are many single-screen rooms that you can scroll that I don't think you should be able to scroll. Start Point and Hermit Gunsmith are the first ones I noticed, but I think there were a few rooms afterwards that should have the camera just locked in place.

Overall, the new facepics are really cool. The cartoonish thick black outlines fit the tone really well, especially considering the original didn't do that. King and Kazuma in particular I thought were the best. One or two of them looked a little weird to me. I think Curly looked a bit off -- maybe it's the mouth?

Loved the new arrangements of the original music. I'm curious how you decided which ones to recreate. The consistent theme seemed to be the original Polar compositions, but even then the title music wasn't changed, so I was surprised when I started hearing the changes partway through the game.

In Misery's dialogue, she spells "ineffective" as "inneffective"

The word WEDGIE gets cut off in... you-know-who's dialog

Entering the hallway with the bathrooms after defeating the ghosts gives the text noise. I'm guessing it's skipping a part in the script?

The exclamation block in the "Outside of the Rave" room doesn't appear if you reset the game or die. Small thing of course... and a problem I assume was also in the original.

In Debug Cat's dialog, he says "mod for a game that was released 10 years ago". I do appreciate that you kept the original script largely intact, but as this line is already a meta reference, I feel like it could be appropriate to change this to the more accurate number of 20!

During the fake title sequence, I was facing in the left direction. Not sure if that was an oversight in the original, but I figure I ended the battle facing left and there was no <MYD added to make sure it was mimicking the direction the player normally faces on the title screen.

Tommy is still spirit in the credits

OP has been updated with version 1.1! I'm pretty sure I was able to address everything you found in-game. The new arrangements were leftovers from the 2018 version, so I decided to leave them in. I was going to do a re-hash of all the original orgs but I decided that some were best left untouched. Originally I had wanted the mod to be widescreen (cause modloader was the new hip thing at the time) which is why some of the maps were scrolling left and right, they were widescreen compatible at one point. I reverted this change cause I feel as though widescreen/16:9 ratio is unnecessary for a mod like this.
...and of course, thank you so much for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed playing Rave Story again after all these years

For some strange reason, despite knowing this exists and is very well-regarded, I'd never actually played it all these years. I have no idea why.
That shall be remedied today.
-The graphics are actually pretty good. I don't care much for 2x sprites generally but it works here. The facepics also fit the mood of the mod quite well.
-Interesting atmosphere, I don't drink or go to parties like this so there's probably some cultural jokes and references i'm not getting. but that's the cool thing about fiction, it lets you live in worlds you would otherwise never step foot in
-I couldn't find the the second word of the passphrase and had to bruteforce it. what was i supposed to do?
-The parallax background here is doing a real good job of messing with my head and throwing me off balance, phenomenal design work here
-I like the little room with the "memes" basil, simple but effective little challenge.
-There's a lot of custom music, so it's a little surprising the death/gameover music is unchanged... (maybe you didn't expect anyone to die in this mod. skill issue to me...)
-The fake door and platform successfully boggled me, so I was like, huh? what? And then upon reaching the true door, I missed it ever so slightly before pressing the down key, causing the "what" graphic to show up... so that was really funny.
-Ooh I like the desktop wallpaper in the Room?.
-67 hahahaha (i know making this joke is anachronistic given when the mod was originally made, it's still funny tho)
-I've actually always wanted to try entering this room from the original CS's credits... it always made me wonder about the in-game universe yet unseen, unexplored... so that was fun! not sure how intentional it is that the fans aren't working, though.
-"The key does... not fit." Haha so this was anticipated, I see
-The Kero Blaster graphics made me do a double take because I recall the mod being made in the same year as Kero Blaster released, so I guess you really took inspiration quick.
-Interesting gimmick with the 'pulling a save disc out' thing
-Coming back from the storage room was genuinely pretty spooky. I didn't recognise those things at first, then the music from OFF kicked in. Great choice, it really sold the scene and worked perfectly here
-Something about the Wind Fortress theme feels like a warm hug from an old friend... despite not really being part of the original game's final soundtrack, or maybe precisely because it wasn't? not really related to the mod but i felt like saying that anyway.
-Oh wow the boombox gave us sunglasses that's rad
-There were some platforming parts that I had no trouble traversing patiently, but after getting the boombox I refused to jump around like i was just doing a few minutes ago and insisting on flying everywhere even if it ended up being more tedious at times. There's gotta be a life lesson in there about how convenience can corrupt your soul irreversibly. Or something. (No this is genuinely something I believe in to a certain extent)
-Very sneaky life capsule hidden under the rest area there :p
-"A mod for a game that was released over 20 years ago" Huh? I had assumed this HD release was just a resprite... or was this the only text that was changed? (Edit: I just read Tpcool's post, that clears that up.) But yeah, to think it was already 10 years when the mod was made, and that could be considered old, and then rereleasing it now 20 years later, whew... it's been a long time, hasn't it...
-"Do you think this'll go on forever?" Wow, well played, honestly. I had just been thinking, "man, this is just a little joke mod sort of thing, isn't it? it'll probably end here... oh, wait, guess not, surely it'll end here... oh, wait, guess not..." I really had been thinking about how it seemed to keep stretching more than I expected it to.
-
i honestly have been thinking about this (debug cat's point) for a while. eventually, all discussion of cave story is going to dry up, there'll be nothing left, and it genuinely scares me to think about it. i've been attached to this game for so long. in fact i had thought this was happening back in around... 2018 or so, when the forums were seeing less and less activity and i thought there weren't any other big cs fan communities around, so i took that as indicative of cs declining, not forums. now i realise i was mistaken about that, and cs is still alive in a bunch of other places, but still... a completed game (ie no new content and updates and stuff like many other famous games generally do), tens of years old... there's only so long that people will speak of it. i don't want this to die. i don't want it to die any more than most people don't want their friends and family to die. my heart wouldn't be able to take it. what do i do? i know it's inevitable, but what do i do?
-...oh goD IT'S STILL GOING lol
-nah man i can't. i can't even. this is seriously tugging at my heartstrings. it is 3:44 am i am going to bed. or at least will try to.
-...And now my fingers are utterly dead after defeating that last boss(es). I had to give myself more health btw, too hard otherwise...
Whew, what an experience. Really good work here, honestly. The gameplay is pretty classic, familiar enough to be like CS but still fresh and original. The terrain and movement changes offer a nice twist on old bosses. The story is pretty deep and emotional, even as the beginning is fun and groovy. I can see why this mod is a classic.
